The Delhi Ophthalmic Society, along with Eye7 Eye Hospitals, organized a CME with a difference on the 14th of January, 2018 at the Hotel Lalit in New Delhi. The main objective of the CME was skill transfer, and dissemination of knowledge regarding the latest scientific and surgical developments in ophthalmology. In addition, the conference provided the delegates an excellent opportunity to interact with eminent ophthalmologists and discuss real world problems faced in everyday clinical practice. Over three hundred delegates attended the event, which was the brainchild of Dr Rahil Chaudhary, Organising Secretary.
The Game of Ophthalmic Thrones, based on the popular American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, had key opinion leaders from the world of ophthalmology competing for the Iron Throne.
Dr. Sanjay Chaudhary invited the “Lords of Ophthalmology” to present their surgical videos which were evaluated by the “Courtiers” and “Ministers (panelists)” on surgical skill, educational value, as well as the presentation and entertainment quotient.
Dr. S Dadeya welcomed the Courtiers to the Game of Ophthalmic Throne, and Dr. Kamlesh inaugurated the ophatlmic duel. The contenders for the Iron Throne were Dr. S Bharti, Dr. N Shroff, Dr. MPS Sachdev, Dr. N Sharma, Dr. S Khokhar, Dr. L Verma, Dr. H Lal and Dr. AK Grover.
After the video presentations, the “Ministers” took over the task of grilling the “Lords” on questions relating to leadership skills, especially in managing difficult and potentially serious medico-legal situations. All questions were pertaining to current ophthalmic practice and its problem areas. Given the current sociopolitical scenario in India, with deteriorating doctor-patient relationships, and a gross mistrust between the two, this discussion was very well appreciated.
The discussion ranged from management skills to dealing with insurance agencies, cluster of endophthalmitis and vicarious liability, as well as judicial activism and restraint. The nuanced responses and discussions meant that the “Courtiers” present found answers to real-life, everyday dilemmas, in a format that was as entertaining as it was informative.
After much deliberation. Dr. Noshir Shroff was crowned the King, and was escorted to the Iron Throne by the Chief Guest, Dr. AK Gupta.
