Ophthalmic Premier League at the Reticon 2017
Reticon 2017, an exclusive annual retina conference was organised by Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai, India. With its main objective being to disseminate knowledge about the latest scientific advances and best practices in medical and surgical treatment of retinal disorders, the conference gave an opportunity to interact with eminent national and international retinal specialists and was attended by 800 delegates . The conference was organised by Dr. Atul Dhawan and Dr. Anusha Venkataraman.
Dr. Rahul Khurana, Partner, North California Retina Vitreous Associates, Associate professor of Ophthalmology at the University of San Francisco and Editor–in-chief American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic News and Education (ONE) Network shared his experience on the use of the latest anti-VEGF, Aflibercept, in the treatment of resistant macular edema secondary to vascular occlusions. He was awarded the Reticon Gold Medal.
He also spoke about the use of suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide as an adjunct with intra vitreal Aflibercept in such cases. Prof. Atul Kumar, Chief, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, discussed the role of High definition Optical coherence tomography (HD-OCT) and OCT Angiography as modern day investigative tools in Ophthalmology.
Other eminent speakers included Dr. Lalit Verma, Chairman, Scientific committee of the All India Ophthalmological Society and Dr. Pramod Bhende, Senior Consultant, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai.
The academic session was followed by a live surgery telecast from Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital that saw experienced surgeons demonstrating their surgical skills. Macular hole surgeries, proliferative diabetic retinopathy and glued IOL were among the surgeries performed. An interactive discussion with the surgeon and with the panelists on the dais provided the audience with many tips and tricks in performing these complex surgeries.
The highlight of Reticon 2017 was the Retinal Premier league. The ophthalmic Retinal premier league (RPL) symposium is an infotainment session akin to the Indian Premier League games but with a difference as the RPL is connected to Ophthalmology. 4 teams with 4 captains participated with each team sporting their team jersey as well as other on stage props. Each team was given 18 minutes to show their most challenging vitreo-retinal case or complication of cataract surgery through videos. The best team lead by Dr. Lalit Verma won the RPL trophy, Dr. Nivean from M.N. hospital won the best video award and Dr. Mohan Rajan from Rajan Eye Care Hospitals, Chennai won the best entertainer video. The conference concluded with a Retinal quiz on challenging clinical situations.
